Khajuraho Group of Monuments – 1 km

Khajuraho Group of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most iconic heritage destinations in India, renowned for its exquisite temples adorned with intricate sculptures that reflect a blend of spirituality, art, and sensuality. Located just 1 kilometer from the main town of Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, these temples were built between the 9th and 12th centuries by the Chandela dynasty. The complex originally housed over 85 temples, of which about 25 have survived the test of time. Divided into Western, Eastern, and Southern groups, the monuments display exceptional craftsmanship in both Hindu and Jain traditions, depicting mythological stories, daily life, and human emotions with remarkable detail.

Kutni Dam & Nature Park is a serene eco-tourism destination situated approximately 17 kilometers from Khajuraho, offering a tranquil escape amidst natural beauty. Built across the Kutni River, the dam has transformed into a picturesque spot for boating, photography, and family outings. The adjacent nature park features landscaped gardens, walking paths, and viewpoints ideal for sunset views over the water. With its peaceful environment and developing tourism infrastructure, Kutni Dam has become a favored spot for nature lovers visiting the Khajuraho region.

Raneh Falls – 20 km

Raneh Falls, located around 20 kilometers from Khajuraho, is a stunning natural waterfall on the Ken River, renowned for its unique volcanic rock formations. The waterfall cascades through a deep canyon of crystalline granite in varying shades of pink, red, and grey, creating a surreal landscape that is particularly dramatic during the monsoon season. Surrounded by lush forest, Raneh Falls lies within the buffer zone of the Ken Gharial Sanctuary, making it not just a visual marvel but also an ecologically significant location. It is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and geology lovers.

Ken Gharial Sanctuary, situated about 24 kilometers from Khajuraho, is a protected wildlife area focused on the conservation of the endangered gharial, a fish-eating crocodilian native to the Indian subcontinent. Established at the confluence of the Ken and Khudar rivers, the sanctuary provides a safe habitat for gharials, marsh crocodiles, and a variety of aquatic and bird species. The sanctuary also includes scenic gorges and forested trails that offer opportunities for birdwatching and eco-tourism. Visitors often combine a visit here with Raneh Falls, located nearby, for a complete nature experience.

Ajaygarh Fort – 80 km

Ajaygarh Fort, perched atop a hill at an elevation of over 1,100 feet and located about 80 kilometers from Khajuraho, is a historical site that offers a blend of heritage and natural beauty. Once a stronghold of the Chandela rulers after the decline of Khajuraho, the fort features ancient temples, granaries, and intricate carvings that hint at its former grandeur. The climb to the fort involves over 500 steps but rewards visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Still relatively unexplored, Ajaygarh Fort is a hidden gem for history buffs and adventure seekers.

Chitrakoot – 170 km

Chitrakoot, located approximately 170 kilometers from Khajuraho, is a sacred town steeped in Hindu mythology and spiritual significance. Spread across the border of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, Chitrakoot is believed to be the place where Lord Rama spent a part of his exile along with Sita and Lakshmana. The town is dotted with ancient temples, ghats, and natural wonders like Ramghat, Kamadgiri, and Hanuman Dhara. Pilgrims and tourists visit Chitrakoot year-round to experience its divine ambiance, historical legends, and the tranquil flow of the Mandakini River.

How to Reach Panna Tiger Reserve from Khajuraho

  • By Car/Taxi: A taxi ride from Khajuraho to Madla Gate (main entry to the reserve) takes around 30 minutes..
  • By Local Transport: Shared jeeps and auto-rickshaws are available but less frequent. We recommend booking a taxi through your hotel or a rel

Safari Timings and Booking Information

Panna Tiger Reserve offers two safari slots daily:

  • Morning Safari: 6:30 AM – 10:30 AM
  • Afternoon Safari: 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM

How to Book:

  1. Visit the official MP Forest Department website: forest.mponline.gov.in
  2. Select ‘Panna Tiger Reserve’ and choose ‘Madla Gate’.
  3. Choose your date, vehicle type (Gypsy), and timing.
  4. Make payment and download your e-permit.

Note: Carry a valid photo ID used during booking when you visit the gate.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Panna is from October to April for pleasant weather and better chances of spotting wildlife. The reserve remains closed during monsoon (July to September).

Important Tips & Precautions

  • Book safaris in advance, especially on weekends. Wear neutral-colored clothes and avoid bright colors.
  • Carry water, sunscreen, cap, and binoculars.
  • Maintain silence during the safari for a better experience.
  • Follow all instructions by the forest guides strictly.
  • Plastic use is strictly prohibited inside the park.
